Seven Simple Life Rules That Will Put You on the Path to Success

If you're working toward any success in your life, there are a few simple rules that you should follow to help increase your chances of making it happen. Here are seven simple rules that can put you to tremendous success.

Rule 1: Focus and Prioritize

If you want success, you must stay focused and prioritize what is most important. If you aren't going to do something, why are you even doing it? If someone else can do it for cheaper or better, cut your losses and move on. After decades of watching leaders in business, sport and politics strive for success—but always fall short—I have found that success comes down to common traits.

Rule 2: Take Responsibility

Successful and productive people don't make excuses but take responsibility for their actions. Although there will be times when things out of your control happen, for example, getting a flat tire or missing a flight, you mustn't let these situations get you down. Instead, use them as learning experiences. Always look at what you could have done differently to ensure better results next time around. In doing so, you can put yourself in a position to succeed because you will constantly be working on improving yourself and recognizing mistakes before they happen again.

Rule 3: Give back

It will make you feel good, but giving back is a necessary component of success. If you ask any successful person what's most important in life, most will tell you that it's not about having or about money—it's about giving. So do your part by volunteering, donating, and helping others whenever possible. Doing so doesn't just feel good; it can help you find purpose and meaning in your life—and let you enjoy more prosperity as well. (And for more motivation to give back, here are ten reasons why giving is better than receiving.)

Rule 4: Choose Kindness

Love your neighbor as yourself. If everyone treated each other with respect and kindness, how different would our lives be? How much more productive would we be? Service counts in all areas of life, including business. If you treat everyone with respect and kindness, not only will they treat you in return, but you'll have a much better shot at reaching your goals. Even if you don't get what you want immediately, remember that treating people well opens up opportunities for mentorship, networking, and friendship down the road.

Rule 5: Embrace Creativity

We live in a pretty amazing world. If you haven't noticed, there's an endless stream of content and information at our fingertips through everything from television and books to social media and other forms of media beyond imagination even 20 years ago. It can be a lot to take in. We must make sure that we stay creative if we want to stay ahead of the curve and embrace different kinds of art, travel, literature, and adventure.

Rule 6: Don't Compare Yourself to Others

It's an easy trap to fall into, but it's one that's guaranteed to keep you from reaching your full potential. There will always be someone who has more—more money, more friends, more status—and if you're focused on what they have and what you don't have, you risk losing sight of your success. Instead of distracting yourself by comparing yourself with others, focus on improving yourself so that others can reach themselves with you! This is a much better use of your time and energy. Remember: Comparison kills all joy.

Rule 7: Have Fun

Even though you've got work to do, make sure you still have time for fun. We all know that enjoying your job is a great way to make it seem less like work, and a bonus is that you'll be more productive when you have fun. When relaxed, we tend to produce better quality work than when stressed and overworked. So relax – you deserve it! After all, what would life be without some simple pleasures?
