A new report from Upwork highlights the top 10 most in-demand skills for technology based on demand and job posting volume over the last year. The information also includes trends in freelancing, technology job growth, and emerging technologies that will appear as in-demand skills by 2022. As of 2017, here are the top 10 most in-demand skills (in no particular order) according to Upwork's report
Cloud Infrastructure
The demand for cloud infrastructure and management services is growing exponentially. The order is so high that cloud computing accounted for 34% of all freelancer activity in 2017. Cloud infrastructure includes topics like network administration, security systems, and many other technological fields. This field of expertise is a highly fast-growing one, with an estimated growth rate of 27% up to 2022.
Mobile Development
We are now turning to freelance platforms like Upwork to get jobs done more than ever. It's not a surprise, considering that roughly 53% of small businesses plan to hire more freelancers over full-time employees in 2018. That number is projected to grow even higher by 2022 when an estimated 63% of companies utilize freelance workers and staff augmentation services for at least some of their labor needs.
Mobile App Testing
As we move into a mobile-first world, companies increasingly turn to mobile applications to deliver their services. This means they need people who can perform quality assurance testing on their applications before releasing them. Because of its technological advancements and speed, up work is quickly becoming a leader in technology outsourcing. More companies than ever are using it as a place to post jobs and hire freelancers worldwide because of its international reach and diverse talent pool.
Software Architecture & Design
Software architecture and design are among the top ten most in-demand skills required in tech by 2022. Software architecture is an integral part of software engineering, encompassing its entire lifecycle and being a fundamental software engineering discipline. Software architectures are documented and communicated with software architecture descriptions or UML diagrams.
DevOps
DevOps is an application lifecycle approach short for development and operations to improve communication between development and IT operations. Today's business environment requires organizations to deploy applications at speed. Achieving success in a DevOps environment can be difficult due to cultural challenges. Still, organizations that embrace DevOps as a philosophy tend to see greater efficiencies through automation across a wide range of systems.
Data Analysis & Management
With technology becoming an increasingly important part of our lives, the demand for tech pros with solid data analysis and management skills will only grow. The report found that jobs in Business and Data Analysis were up by 60 percent since 2013, while those in Software Engineering grew by 32 percent. If you want to add marketable skills to your resumé, a tech degree or coursework focused on data analytics might be a great idea—and hiring managers are likely to agree.
SEO/SEM Expertise
SEO and SEM experts will be in high demand. To prepare, you can brush up on your search engine optimization skills by learning to write great meta descriptions, creating compelling ad copy, and writing landing pages that make visitors want to stay. Additionally, a strong understanding of search engine algorithms will help you develop strategies that keep potential customers returning.
Quality Assurance (QA) Analyst
The #1 most in-demand skill on Upwork. It's also one of a kind, meaning there's no similar skill that ranks even close to it. The QA Analyst role is more popular than all other technical skills combined. What is Quality Assurance? Quality Assurance (QA) professionals check an app or website from end to end to ensure it works properly before it launches publicly.
Business Intelligence (BI) Developer
One of Upwork's fastest-growing roles in technology is Business Intelligence (BI) Developer. A BI developer works with data, analytics, and statistics to build reporting and analysis tools that help businesses make better decisions based on their unique strategies. Combining math, science, technology, creativity, communication skills, and more makes a business intelligence developer an extremely well-rounded candidate.
Graphic Design Specialist
With many companies moving to hire remote workers and freelancers, a graphic design specialist is sure to be in high demand. At Upwork, we've seen a 600% increase in remote work over just five years. This means more people are looking to freelance across various platforms like Upwork. With new technology making it easier to operate remotely, job seekers will increasingly look for tech-savvy freelancers who can do it all or take on specialized tasks like design projects.
