Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and the richest man in the world, has his own set of rules to live by that can be applied to anyone's life and career path. Learn how to use these six principles to become successful and happy in your life.
1) Find your passion
While Bill Gates may have been passionate about computers from a young age, he didn't seem to follow his passion until it found him. In 1978, after dropping out of Harvard and spending some time working at Honeywell, he founded Microsoft. You don't have to drop out of college or spend ten years as a computer programmer to find your passion; you need to actively pursue what makes you happy, whether starting a business or something else entirely.
2) Set high goals
Like many other successful entrepreneurs, Bill Gates started his company with high ambitions and lofty goals. And although many of us aren't lucky enough to end up running a multi-billion dollar company at age 30, we can still learn from Bill's experience by keeping our expectations realistic but setting them far enough out that they feel unattainable. If you have unrealistic expectations of yourself or your project, you'll likely become frustrated or give up when you inevitably fail to meet those benchmarks. But if you set a goal that seems beyond reach, it might motivate you to accomplish more than you ever thought possible.
3) Get good grades
If Bill Gates hadn't done well in school, his career trajectory would have been very different. It's easy to say that good grades don't matter or that you can succeed without them, but with so many industries requiring a college degree to even apply for a job, it can be tough to get ahead if you don't have solid grades. And let's face it: Being successful is about more than just money—it's about being happy and fulfilling. If you want to pursue your dreams and live a remarkable life, you need good grades. Nothing else matters if you don't have those!
4) Start early
If you're wondering how to start a successful business, look no further than the world's richest man and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Even he started his company at the age of 20. By that time, he had a handful of lucrative jobs and several years of entrepreneurial experience, courtesy of an investment in an early Albuquerque computer company. If anything can be said about Microsoft, it was built on hard work, long hours, and dedication—and all those traits started at an early age for its co-founder. The younger you are when you start your business (or even your career), the more time you have to build up your skills, knowledge base, and reputation.
5) Do what you love
If you're going to spend a significant portion of your life working, you might as well do something that makes you happy. That's why many people choose to major in what they love. Think about it: If you take time off from a job you hate, how difficult is it to jump back into it? Conversely, if taking a vacation is a significant investment because of how much time your job takes up, will you be less likely to want to go on vacation? It's only natural. But happiness in your career can quickly be taken for granted—; according to one study, only 36% of workers were satisfied with their jobs. How about you?
6) Invest wisely
As we know, of all that is said in life, it's most important what you do and not what you say. Don't get stuck in a situation where your mouth is running faster than your brain. Set small goals, work hard, and start doing them right away. Start with little things around your house or apartment, like cleaning out junk drawers, laundry, or tidying up small spaces. You can even spend 20 minutes per day working toward something bigger like clearing credit card debt or becoming more health-conscious by adding healthy snacks to your daily routine. By being consistent with small tasks every day, you will ultimately be successful at big projects later on!
